WEIRD BLOOM
Weird Bloom is a collaboration between painter Anna Maria Schoenrock, musician Fred Hellmann and myself- a 3D Motion Designer.
The project was born from a fundamental question: how can we craft content that is both meaningful and relevant within the realm of Motion Design, especially amidst the saturation of platforms like Midjouney and IG, where Motion Design often appears to cyclically replicate itself?
In a surreal DAYCYCLE OF SELFDOUBT “Weird Bloom” explores the theme of always feeling “off ”, different or weird, revealing moments of beauty and hope within.

WHO
We conceptualized the day cycle based on our shared exploration
of several themes, including the sensations of feeling ‘off, self-doubt,
and imposter syndrome.
The day cycle unfolds as a continuous loop
and serves as the overarching narrative arc.
Comprising six distinct times of day, each part of the day
symbolizes a different feeling of unease.
Utilizing a method similar to ‘Cadavre Exquis’, we employ ourselves as a dynamic iteration tool,
creating a HUMAN FILTER for our collaborative work.
The process unfolds with a painting by Anna for each designated time of day.
Subsequently, I interpret her painting, drawing inspiration to craft a 3D piece.
While the 3D work may incorporate elements from the original painting,
it has the flexibility to explore specific components in depth.
It is crucial to the creative process that my 3D piece is not a direct translation
of Anna’s painting; instead, it is an inspired transformation.
This intentional departure ensures that the work remains dynamic
and avoids stagnation or predictability. Anna, in turn, finds inspiration
in my 3D piece to create another painting,
initiating a continuous back-and-forth exchange.
We iterate through this process for each time of the day at least twice,
with the option to introduce additional repetitions based on the evolving outcomes,
ultimately striving for a gratifying and innovative result.
MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES
There isn’t just one outcome, but multiple possibilities within each iteration.
We selected the one to pursue based on how well it aligned with our concept
and what felt most fitting.
EXAMPLE Blue Hour
The initial 3D was too sterile, too clean.
Since the topic of our collaboration is around a human emotional journey.
So we decided to incorporate 3D scans of our HERO OBJECTS of every scene
and therefore introduce a more tactile, weirder feeling, as well as some human imperfections.
This process also strengthens the connection between Annas art and my 3D.
THE DAYCYCLE OF SELFDOUBT
Here you can see the different facettes and iterations for each time of the day.
DAWN:
Brings a sense of hopeful anticipation tinged with an eerie strangeness.
A bizarre and uncomfortable scene unfolds in a desert beneath two midday suns.
SUNSET:
An eccentric, ecstatic celebration of embracing weirdness and difference unfolds.
As Sunset marks a good trip, the subsequent...
BLUE HOUR:
Represents the ‘trip that begins to slip,’ becoming blurry and disorienting.
NIGHT:
A moment of peace arrives, accepting the weirdness that permeates.
DEMONS:
...just before the early hours when the demons beneath the bed emerge.
It is that time when thoughts, overdue for sleep, run amok in our minds
GALLERY
EXHIBITION
During a two week art residency at Kultur Local Fürth Anna had the opportunity
to create an exhibition space with pieces of art created in the broader context of our project.
Here she took the opportunity to explore a more installative exhibition style,
which in turn inspired me to go back into the digital.
Together, we want to extend our reach to galleries and artist programs,
seeking to expand our collaborative endeavors in the year ahead.
